CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA - Earlier this year, Australian Indigenous Basketball and Apunipima Cape York Health Council invited Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to submit artwork for the Apunipima Australian Indigenous All Stars National Basketball Team 2018 Uniform Design Competition.
The competition was a chance for talented Indigenous artists and their winning artwork to be recognised across Australia and New Zealand. The winning piece of artwork will form the major design component of the Apunipima All Stars 2018 uniform kit. The national Indigenous representative team will wear the uniform this September, when they take on the New Zealand Maori side in the 5th Annual Trans-Tasman Clash in New Zealand.
Following an extensive review of amazing entries submitted from all over Australia, the competition judging panel made the exciting call and awarded Mikaela Morgan the winner. Ms. Morgan is a young lady from the Wiradjuri clan in Dubbo, New South Wales.
A requirement for the entry, the artwork was to reflect both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures and include the following elements in the design:
· Wellbeing – Mind, Body, Spirit
Mikaela hit the brief perfectly with her artwork, showcasing the beauty of bringing both cultures together. Within her entry she expressed the story behind the design, sharing that within cultures everyone can share and tell stories through rivers and animals, and with the land gain knowledge in mind, body and spirit.
Joel Khalu, Head Coach of the Apunipima All Stars was amazed with Ms. Morgan’s design.
“This design really captured what we were looking for when we talked about the criteria embracing both Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultures,” Khalu said.
“This is the first time we’ve partnered with Apunipima to conduct a uniform design competition and we are thrilled with how the design has turned out.”
“I’m certainly proud to be wearing this special uniform and I know they players will also share the same passion when they suit up in September.”
As part of her prize Mikaela received an Apple iPad and her own personalised uniform kit. Each playing singlet will also have Mikaela’s name featured in recognition within its tag.
