CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA - The region’s premier streetball hoops stars will hit the Cairns Esplanade court tomorrow for the Cairns 3X3 Reconciliation Basketball Tournament.
The tournament is being delivered under the Queensland Government’s Embracing 2018 Legacy Program for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and will be the first official basketball event to be held at the recently constructed Esplanade court.
Games commence at 10am on Saturday morning and will run into the afternoon, with the under 18 boy’s grand final scheduled for 1:15pm and the open men’s final tipping off at 1:30pm.
Event organizer Joel Khalu said the tournament was a great way to showcase Far North Queensland basketball talent in a different format of the sport.
“3X3 Basketball is played at a much higher pace than the normal 5 on 5 version of the game, which makes it much more engaging for spectators.” Khalu said.
“Basketball fans in Cairns are in for a treat, especially with the caliber of players involved and being free to watch, we’re encouraging the local community to get down to the Esplanade and check out the action.”
State Member for Cairns Mr. Michael Healy M.P will officially open the tournament at 10am.
